Have you played an FPS game at 60 fps then 144 fps? can you tell the difference? as many people say the eye cannot see more than 60fps is rubbish, you can feel the difference and it is very noticeable.Īll routers are not created equal and most ISP supplied ones are crap! some block so much traffic and do not allow you to open them up as the ISP has a duty of care to protect you from unsolicited traffic, a lot of people blame a game or their internet connection when in actual fact it is probably their router that is knobbling them, I have always upgraded my router to one that allows me to do what I want.

Think of it another way, if you push your PC to a point where it drops FPS or has frame time variances do you notice it? because I do and I am very susceptible to it, what makes you think that erratic ping or dropped packets are any different in the overall feel of things? We have had zero disconnects, lag or any other oddities, the problems with lag etc have been by admission client side where the user has pushed their machines to a point where FPS has dipped and they have stuttered, they know this and have said the server is not at fault and this is a couple of people we are talking about. I do networking and IT for a living and yes UPnP is supposed to do as you say but also DMZ is a forced way of opening yourself up to everything, it does work and I can get 30 people on here in the last few days to attest to this if you like, it is not placebo and the post you refer to has weight. The affected players in my group are able to play other MP games just fine. If NAT were an issue, the affected players would have issues in other games as well. You only run into issues when your router isn't uPnP capable, or if you have conflicting services. Effectively, the game DMZ's itself, because uPnP says, "Hey, I have a service available on port 12345, and it needs to be exposed on the WAN interface." The router establishes the NAT traversal rules, and everything works fine. NAT is only a problem when services on one side of a router cannot reach services on the other.Īll consoles use uPnP for NAT traversal. NAT is a mystery to pretty much anyone who doesn't do networking for a living, and so they blame it for their problems. Eliminating NAT is just as likely to regrow the hair on my head as it is to improve my graphics. Sorry, but this is placebo effect, plain and simple.
